If you would like to try something different, but typically Spanish, then I can recommend Casa Jaen in Guardamar. At the new roundabout on the N332 at Guardamar, turn right into the High Street then continue straight on and the restaurant is on the right-hand side about half a mile down. It has blue awnings on the outside. Park anywhere you can find on the High Street or side roads, there are usually plenty of spaces.

It's actually a pension (cafe style) rather than a restaurant and it is filled with Spanish people. It gets very busy and noisy but is excellent value and the food and wine are very good.

It's very plain and simple with paper table clothes but the food is very tasty and generous. They will bring you a basket with half a baguette each and alioli, then a salad (one each).

The menu is quite extensive for a menu del dia; you have a choice of about 10 to 15 starters. The meat and potato stew is delicious and the paella and omelettes are good too, if you have camembert for a starter it's half a camembert. The starter portions are extremely generous.

There are also around 20 main courses to choose from ' something for everyone'. Again you can have omelette, chicken with pepper sauce, pork knuckle, fried camembert (a whole Camembert), the home made moussaka is lovely, pasta, grilled sole, swordfish etc. There are also specials each day which the waiter will tell you about (sometimes ostrich). Most of the main courses are served with chips.

There are several desserts which include profiteroles, arroz con leche, flan, crepe, fruit etc. Again, large portions, the biggest bowl of arroz con leche I've ever eaten!

It also includes half a litre of wine per person (the red is lovely, straight from the barrel) and water. All this for €8.50 per person.

It's not cordon bleu and it's not for a special occasion - the service is erratic but friendly. If you enjoy excellent service and a quiet meal then it's really not for you. However, it is excellent rustic food, great value and very Spanish. A great experience, especially shared with friends.

After your meal, there is a lovely park in Guardamar that you can walk to from the restaurant and feed the squirrels, ducks, peacocks etc. if you want to walk off a few of the calories from your lunch! To find the park, when you come out of the restaurant you can either turn left, then left again or right, then right again. Either way the park will be approximately 200 yards in front of you. Simples!

If anyone tries any of the restaurants that have been reviewed on the website please let us know (whether you enjoy the experience or not) then well know if its worth us keep doing the reviews. Enjoy.
